Sun-Tzu Liao was was the first child of Chancellor Romano Liao and her consort, Tsen Shang on 9 August 3031. He would be raised in the cutthroat world of the post-Fourth Succession War Capellan Confederation, witnessing firsthand the mercurial brutality of his mother and the tragic suicide of his maternal grandfather, Chancellor Maximilian Liao.
The purges following the conflict would mark him, leaving the young heir cold and calculating even as he tempered his mother's most dangerous tempers.
He would attend the Wolf's Dragoons conference and training camp, where he proved to be a competent, if unimpressive MechWarrior. There he would meet and eventually become engaged to Isis Marik of the Free Worlds League, a pairing made to strengthen an alliance with the powerful industrial nation.
He would use this impetus to punish the Federated Commonwealth during the Marik-Liao Offensive in 3057. The offensive was ostensibly initiated to punish them for the concealed death and replacement of Thomas Marik's young son Joshua Marik with a body double by Victor Steiner-Davion.
He would go on to garner support from the other Successor Lords at the First Whitting Conference, where he would be made First Lord of the newly restored Star League. He would go on to use this position to aid him in seizing back territories lost in the Fourth Succession War using SLDF troops to garrison worlds. This Xin Sheng (New Birth) movement would radically increase his popularity within the Confederation.
