The Stalker was produced as a measure to break the back of the Periphery during the Reunification War. This action, combined with its low cost of production and immense firepower, earned it a place as both one of the most common and famous Assault-class BattleMechs ever produced.
Armed with far more weapons than it could ever hope to fire in a single salvo, it relied on the incredibly powerful League Combat Computer. This specialized Battle Computer was capable of identifying and coordinating weapons fire in precise, tightly controlled groups for optimal use and range effectiveness. With the loss of technology during the Succession Wars, these valuable and powerful systems have since vanished, leaving surviving Stalkers a shadow of their former glory.
Despite this, the Stalker still serves frequently in prominent roles both offensive and defensive in every Great House army.[1]
Armament and Capabilities
Stalkers are built around a powerful main weapons array, capable of laying down an enormous amount of fire from their mix of energy and missile weapons. Their arsenals are centered around a 30 to 270 meter range, making them excellent area denial 'Mechs, both offensively and defensively.
13.5 tons of armor assist them in withstanding tremendous fire while they move into position. The Stalker's low speed does mean it needs to be complemented by flanking 'Mechs to protect it while advancing or holding a defensive location. This limitation often leads MechWarriors to prefer ambush tactics, hiding inside buildings until an enemy closes or passes, then striking at optimum range.[1]
Models and Configurations
STK-3H
Designed to take better advantage of range, the 3H drops the Magna Large Lasers for a pair of LRM 20 racks, trading medium range fire for much stronger long range attacks. While this does allow for greater offensive power, it does not add more ammunition, leading to poor endurance.[1]
STK-3T
A common mercenary refit, the 3T swaps the SRM 6 launchers out for smaller Holly SRM 4s and using the extra space for two additional Heat Sinks. While not a huge change, it does provide some relief from the enormous short range heat load.
STK-4H
In an attempt to better manage the enormous heat load, the 4H drops one of the LRM 10 racks in exchange for six additional Heat Sinks. This helps it at the expense of some of its long range firepower.[1]
STK-4P
Perhaps the most radical departure from the original design, the 4P strips ten tons of equipment from the chassis. One LRM 10 and four Medium Lasers are stripped away to reduce the strain on the Stalker's actuators.[1]
STK-5M
The Free Worlds League update of the Stalker was built to maintain much of what the original was, dropping a single Large Laser in favor of a NARC Missile Beacon, while the remaining one was traded for a Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser. The electronics were also updated, including the Wasat Aggressor to get it closer to the original League computer. Finally, three Heat Sinks were dropped, and the remaining were swapped with Double Heat Sinks.[3]
STK-5S
The Federated Commonwealth Opted to increase the formidable close range capabilities, dropping both Large Lasers for Large Pulse Lasers. An XL Engine was added, and an extra Heat Sink put in. To round out the modification, an AMS and CASE improved the defenses.[3]
STK-5T
Built as an upgrade to the 3T, the 5T seeks to further improve the endurance of the original. The SRM 4s are dropped entirely for four Holly Streak SRM 2s. The Medium Lasers range is improved by upgrading them to ER models, and the number of Heat Sinks is reduced to sixteen, but upgraded to double strength. A ton of extra armor and CASE is installed for overall longer survivability.
