Designed as a replacement for the centuries old Stinger and Wasp BattleMechs, the Mercury was presented as the first in a new era of design. It was to be faster and better armed than any of its predecessors without any major reductions in performance or defense.

First deployed in 2742, it was a marvel of electronic engineering, showcasing the SLDF's newest targeting and tracking suites. Despite this, Mitchell Vehicles were hesitant to disclose the full capabilities of this new equipment, and access was restricted to Star League army forces.

Until the Exodus, the Mercury only saw deployment with forces stationed on Terra, the majority of which departed with General Kerensky. Few would remain in the Inner Sphere, the bulk of which served with the Third Regimental Combat Team, who would later become the Eridani Light Horse.

The Mercury would suffer significant attrition during the Succession Wars as replacement parts for its specialized electronics and myomer bundles were used up.[1]

Armament and Capabilities

Built for speed and combat endurance, the Mercury was outfitted with an energy based loadout, permitting it to remain in the field or on raiding maneuvers for extended periods. A pair of Martell Medium Lasers gives it a formidable punch for its weight, backed up by two Hessen IX Small Lasers for infighting.

The Small Lasers in particular are matched and built for easy removal, allowing them to be quickly swapped if damaged or destroyed in combat. This feature would later evolve amongst the Clans into the basis for OmniMech technology, though it would be lost to the Inner Sphere during the Amaris Civil War and First Succession War.

Unlike the Small Lasers, the Martell Medium Lasers use different power systems, integrating them more fully with the chassis. The arm mounted model utilizes a diffused power feed all along the upper and lower arm, allowing it to remain functional even after damage to the limb. The torso mounted system relies on a narrow profile system that takes up minimal space, ensuring most attacks will miss it entirely.[1][3]

The MCY-99 that proceeded the Succession Era Mercury was built around the specialized Myomer Accelerated Signal Circuitry, or MASC system. These powerful myomer bundles served as a form of turbocharging that allowed the Mercury to achieve short bursts of speed, able to reach up to 216 kph. While this capability deteriorated the actuators, it could prove life saving in specific circumstances.

On top of this, it featured new Ferro-Fibrous Armor that granted substantial additional protection, as well as advanced Heat Sinks that more efficiently calculated and shunted heat loads away from the 'Mech's critical systems.

Critics pointed out the lack of Jump Jets and thin rear armor were major vulnerabilities in the design. These drawbacks were mostly tolerated as worthwhile tradeoffs for the advantages of the design. [4]/>

Models and Configurations

MCY-97
The Com Guards premier variant of the Mercury trades the firepower of the preceding MCY-99 for the powerful Beagle Active Probe sensor package at the cost of one of each of its lasers. It is particularly favored with the 79th and 143rd Divisions.[3]

MCY-99
The original model of Mercury featured MASC augmented legs, giving it short bursts of incredible speed. It used the significantly advanced DataTech 401 Comms and Skyhunter IV TTS in place of the more primitive Datacom and Scarborough systems. Three tons of Mitchell-091 Ferro-Fibrous armor provided marginally better protection than the Stinger or Wasp, though less than its downgraded successor.[4]
